Huazong (online alias: Huazong Lost His Golden Cudgel; real name: Wu Dong) is a prominent figure in Chinese media and public discourse. He is featured in the national higher-education textbook History of Chinese Journalism and Communication, a recognition that underscores his influence in the field.
As early as 2011, Huazong authored A Guide to Zhuangbility, which quickly went viral online and popularized the term “bīgé.” On Weibo, his exposés of counterfeit luxury watches led to the downfall of Yang Dacai, Director of the Shaanxi Provincial Work Safety Administration, establishing a classic case of online anti‑corruption.
Beginning in 2012, Huazong collaborated with Southern Weekly, The Beijing News, and other media outlets to investigate the shadowy operations of the World Luxury Association, prompting the Ministry of Civil Affairs to dismantle offshore and counterfeit organizations. The related lawsuits were selected among the “Top Ten Influential Litigation Cases in China 2015” and were cited in the work report delivered by Supreme People’s Court President Zhou Qiang at the Fourth Session of the 12th National People’s Congress.
In 2015, he traveled to war-torn northern Myanmar to visit the MNDAA’s (Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army) 311th Brigade and the 125th refugee camp. The following year, he became the only social media representative accredited by Myanmar’s Ministry of Information to report on the political transition in Naypyidaw. In 2018, during a reporting trip to North Korea, he produced The Pyongyang Barrier, which garnered over ten million reads. At the end of that year, his short film The Secret of the Cup exposed hygiene scandals in five-star hotels, prompting the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to launch an industry-wide rectification campaign.
In 2019, he partnered with Phoenix New Media to launch Mr. Hua’s Forensics. In 2020, he teamed up with Tencent News to produce Night Line No. 42. That same year, his documentary Mask Hunter garnered over 100 million views across platforms. It was shortlisted for both the China Documentary Academy Awards and the Golden Kapok Awards at the Guangzhou International Documentary Festival, and was named Weibo’s “Most Influential Documentary of the Year.” In 2023, his documentary Chasing the Tide was recognized as an Outstanding Broadcasting Program by the Guangdong Provincial Radio and Television Bureau, and his film Still Waters Run Deep was again shortlisted for the Documentary Academy Awards. In 2024, Wayback received another nomination, and his podcast Wannatalk was awarded Weibo’s “Breakout Audio Episode of the Year.”
Huazong was featured as a “Year-End Special Character” by the Economic Observer in 2011. In 2012, he was named one of Businessweek China’s “50 People of the Year,” awarded “Intellectual of the Year” by New Weekly, and selected among Caixin’s “Top Ten Thought Leaders” and the Ethisphere Institute’s “100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics.” In 2013, The Beijing News named him a “Chinese Youth Role Model.”
He has appeared on NewRank’s lists of the “Top 200 Most Influential Internet Personalities of 2015” and “Top 100 New Media Figures of 2018.” In 2019, he received the inaugural “Woodpecker Award” from the China Consumers Association and was named “Vlogger of the Year” at the 20th China Video Awards. In 2021, he was honored as Weibo’s “Most Influential Livestream Collaborator,” followed by the 2022 title of “Top Host V-logger of the Year” jointly awarded by the China Internet Association and the China General Chamber of Commerce. In 2023, he was named one of Weibo’s “Top 10 Livestream Hosts,” and in 2025, he was recognized as “Content Explorer of the Year” at the 5th Muiltiverse Content Explorers Conference.
